Amazing Light April 9, 2010

There is an essence  of light on the cape and it is hard to explain.  There truly is a “cape light”  It is not specific to a season, I have come across it at various times in the year.  It is amazing.

Traveling around Brewster and Dennis on RTE 6A earlier this week photographing all that was out in bloom, I came along Sesuit Harbor and Cold Storage Beach in Dennis.  I am not sure if I have ever been to this harbor and  beach. They are one the northside and  I found them easily off of RTE 6A.  The light on RTE 6A wasn’t exciting me so I traveled to the ocean and found such gorgeous light.

It is a light where the ocean meets the horizon and the horizon meets the sky.  It is so blue and deep in color and yet there is glowing light that reflects  on the sand. It is wonderful to experience and it is usually fleeting.

I love coming across this light and love when my camera is with me.  I hope you enjoy this Cape light……

Garden Therapy….Finally! April 1, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — thecapecodwoman @ 10:47 am

So the rain has finally STOPPED….for the moment or longer I hope! It was forecasted to have blue skies today but we can’t have it all!  It is very overcast and the temperature  is a whopping 51 degrees but I decided to spend the morning in the garden getting ready for the square foot gardening technique that I am exploring this season.

I have 5 raised beds in the back acre of my yard and for the past several years planted them in the traditional rows. I made a long  furrow and spread out the contents of the seed packet in the row and hope for the best.  I never thinned the seedlings and wedding was a pain to say the least!

Well, with this concept you divide your raised beds into square foot sections and plant a different variety of seed in each section.  The amount of seed you plant depends on the amount of space the plant needs to grow.  So from one seed of cauliflower to 16 of carrots, you just plant that many seeds.  It is supposed to yield better crops because there is really no thinning and weeding is easier as well.  I can’t wait until this garden spouts up, it is going to look like a beautiful patch work quilt!

I also built a trellis for the plants like peas, cukes and tomatoes that like to climb.  With the awesome help of Maggie at the Home Depot in Wareham, we cut and fitted a wonderful  from 1/2 inch PVC pipe.  The netting is from Burpee and fit great!

I hope you will follow my garden’ journey this season!

The bed before I sectioned it off

Sectioned off

Planted with markers so I can remember what and where I planted them!

The garden plot. I have 4 more beds to ready!

Busy Day with Senator, Reps, and the MFA February 24, 2010

My Chamber of Commerce (The Canal Region Chamber) asked me to photograph the  legislative forum that they were holding this morning on the state of the economy.  Senate President Therese Murray, State Rep. Susan Williams Gifford, and State Rep. Jeffrey R. Perry were all on the panel.  Well folks, they really had nothing encouraging to say.  There will be more jobs lost especially in health care and mental health services. And the unemployment rate is really terrible.   It was really depressing.  A lot of the revenue money was lost due to the increase in our sales tax.  That revenue  is now going to online shops or across the border to New Hampshire.  It truly was sad.  I hope they can get their act together in Boston.  I was glad I went but not what I heard.

Then I was off to the MFA to see the Harry Callahan exhibit in the Herb Ritts gallery. (the photo I took in the MFA of the man falling was appropriate I thought after the morning meeting I had just been to)

The Callahan exhibit is a small sampling of his work on display but worth the trip if you are a fan of Callahan.  It runs until July 3rd.

Of course we made the trip to the fabulous MFA cafeteria downstairs for a quick-lunch and once again were not disappointed.

On the way out we caught the small exhibit Café and Cabaret:  Toulouse-Lautrec’s Paris if you are a fan of that type of French painting/print making.

Walmart and the second grader January 8, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — thecapecodwoman @ 8:32 pm

Well it’s Friday and today is my weekly gig as the Suze Orman of the second grade. Trying to get these kids to understand the basics of money by playing a quick game of store. Yikes! In this digital age I wonder if they will ever learn to read time or give change. How many quarters in a dollar?? One of the kids I played with today, kept reciting the Walmart slogan (which just left my mind) it is something like – “live better… something, something,…. Wal-mart”…. I wonder if when Walmart was coming up with their newest slogan if they were targeting the second grader kids? or has this kids seen way too much tv? Why am I so saturated with ad bombardment that I have blocked it out completely?
